Once a month there is a meeting of the Waikiki Neighborhood Board to discuss issues affecting the people that live here. Tonight's subject there was a presentation of the City and State's new program to try to help the homeless people.
I was surprised to learn that there are homeless families where family members work jobs but still cannot afford housing.
One resident spoke and told us that he has been homeless for many years and wanted to commit suicide. He is now getting assistance and pulling his life together. He became homeless when he found his best friend with his wife and could not handle it. He started using drugs and he wound up on the street.
A woman spoke about being homeless after getting out of the military, one many others. She is now taking medication and is getting help and doing better.
驚いたのは、仕事をしていて子供がいる人も、家賃が高いために、家族揃ってホームレスになっていくことでした。
長年ホームレスだったシングルファーザーが、どうしてホームレスになったか、そのいきさつを語ってくれました。自殺も何度も考えたそうです。彼の親友と彼の奥さんが深い関係になっているのを知った時、どうしようも無くなりドラッグに溺れ、ホームレスになったとのことでした。今は保護を受け、その生活からぬけだしています。
その他、元軍人も精神の病に犯されホームレスになっていくと、元軍人女性ホームレスが語り、やはり保護をうけて、精神科からの薬で良くなっていったそうです。
